Mexico, a country amongst the world's largest metal producers, has a mining history dating back almost 500 years. Receiving considerable foreign and local investment, the exploration and production of minerals has preference for land use over other economic activities with total mineral production in 2010 reaching $13.9 billion. According to Behre Dolbear, Mexico is the 5th ranked country in the world for mining investment in 2012. In 2011, it was the top silver producer in the world, producing over 30 million ounces, and the 10th ranked gold producer in the world producing 2.89 million ounces.
Mexico is the most politically stable country in Latin America and continues to have pro-mining regulations in place, including no levies or royalties. SEMARNAP (Ministry of Environment in Mexico) has policies in place to keep mining in alignment with internationally accepted environmental standards.
